Autumn road trip in Finland

Forest roads, lakeside stops and slow travel through the Finnish countryside.

Finland is at its best in autumn when the forests shift into red, orange and gold and the summer crowds disappear. It is also one of the easiest seasons for a road trip: cooler weather, quieter towns and long stretches of forest and lake scenery. Visit Finland actively promotes autumn road trips as a way to experience the changing colours across the country.

A relaxed route: Helsinki — Porvoo — Lakeland

For a short autumn road trip, I would avoid trying to cross the entire country. Instead, combine one historic town with the lake district.

Stop 1 — Porvoo

Less than an hour from Helsinki, Porvoo is an easy first stop. The old town is known for cobbled streets, colourful wooden houses and red riverside warehouses. In autumn, the atmosphere becomes quieter and softer than in peak summer, which suits WeekendNorth’s slower style particularly well.

Spend a few hours walking the old town and riverfront, then stay for coffee or lunch before continuing east or north.

Stop 2 — Finnish Lakeland

Lakeland is where the road trip starts to feel properly Finnish: forests, water and long roads with very little traffic. The region contains thousands of lakes and nature areas, and autumn is a particularly good time for hiking, berry picking and simply driving between viewpoints and small towns.

You do not need a complicated itinerary. Pick one base and explore from there.

Stop 3 — forest roads and lakeside stops

The best part of an autumn road trip is often not the destination but the transitions between them. Stop at viewpoints, small cafés and lakes whenever the road looks interesting.

Autumn in Finland is about colour and calm rather than a long list of attractions.

Take a different route back toward Helsinki and allow time for spontaneous stops.

Where to stay

Choose a small lakeside hotel, cabin or countryside property rather than a city hotel if possible. The accommodation itself should be part of the experience.

For this route, I would split the stay between Porvoo and Finnish Lakeland rather than using one base for the whole trip.

Haikko Manor & Spa — for a refined first night near Porvoo
A historic manor and spa hotel in a maritime setting just outside Porvoo. It works well if you want the first night to feel like part of the trip rather than simply a place to sleep.

Hotel Punkaharju — for classic Finnish Lakeland atmosphere
A historic hotel in one of Finland’s best-known lake landscapes. It is a strong choice if you want forest, water and a more traditional countryside stay rather than a resort-style experience.

Järvisydän — for a full lakeside escape
A nature hotel and spa resort on the shores of Lake Saimaa next to Linnansaari National Park. A good option if you want the accommodation itself to be part of the trip, with lake scenery, spa time and easy access to nature.

When to go

The exact timing of autumn colour varies from year to year and by latitude, so the best dates depend on where in Finland you travel. Generally, colour appears earlier in the north and later in southern Finland.

WeekendNorth tip

Do not plan too much. Autumn road trips work best when you leave enough time to stop because a lake, road or forest simply looks good.
